“My job is forever changing and evolving as the project progresses.”
Procurement Business Partner
“It’s exciting to be part of such a historic project. In ten years' time, I’ll be able to look back and say ‘I helped build that railway’.”
Mel doesn’t have a rail background. But that doesn’t matter. She and her colleagues in Procurement Operations get a lot of support from technical stakeholders.
“Everyone is really keen to share their knowledge. I’ve learned so much about construction and high speed rail.”
Procurement on a project like HS2 is certainly a unique experience. “We’re responsible for a mix of contracts, from finance and technical to legal services. I’m also a link to the directorates, and I support the team with stakeholder engagement.”
Mel relishes the diversity of her day to day role. “Most days, I end up doing something completely different from what I expected! The speed we need to get things done means we have to react quickly to requests and find the fastest compliant route to get a contract in place.”
She wouldn’t have it any other way. “There’s never a dull day, the hours just fly by. The team and our stakeholders are all really committed to the project and work together really well.”
