“At HS2, if you've got the passion to succeed, the opportunities to develop are endless.”
Head of Health and Safety (Commercial, Land and Property)
Alan is full of enthusiasm for his role.
“It is a huge opportunity to be part of a mega project, with great and varied health and safety challenges. The prospect for developing myself is fantastic.”
The scale might be huge, but as Alan notes, “HS2 is essentially a start-up company.” That means a significant part of his role involves developing systems and processes.
He also takes care to ensure that “health and safety is addressed in every procurement - from main works contracts to design contracts.“
Alan enjoys the constant state of change across HS2. “As the project has evolved through various stages, so has my role. The directorate itself has evolved, and will keep doing so as the project develops.”
The advantages are clear. “This constant evolution keeps my role fresh and exciting. What’s more, it provides continual opportunities to develop skills and experiences.”
When it comes to shaping a culture of health and safety, Alan says everyone has a role to play.
“Anyone who joins HS2 needs to have a strong belief in health and safety. We want employees to be leaders in this area, at every level of the organisation. They will begin to develop the safety culture in the business through the actions that they demonstrate to their colleagues. Empowerment and accountability are the keys to this.”
